December 2024 - Sharpening
At our December 2024 meeting, Tim Harteau covered common sharpening issues, jigs and fixtures to improve your sharpening techniques. Sharpening your woodturning tools is crucial because a sharp edge allows for smooth, controlled cuts, producing better quality finishes with less effort, minimizing the risk of accidents, and preventing damage to your workpiece by enabling you to take finer shavings instead of tearing or splintering the wood when using a dull tool; essentially, a sharp tool cuts efficiently and precisely, making the woodturning process safer and more enjoyable.

I haven’t heard of a grit size for a gouge before. Is that really a thing or is that just a reference to my shaky hand or dull tool?🤣. Great video!
Excellent demonstration.
why did u not try to put together the flakes with hot glue
Can't answer your question ... this demonstrator is no longer with our club.
Nice video. What is the offset jig you are using?
Jointer offset jig. You can get it from Ruth Niles bottle stoppers
Thanks for this demo, great idea. Unfortunate catch but still got the idea and method over, cheers.
Beautiful piece of wood 🥰🥰
way to f up good wood no end
Gorgeous piece of wood.
Thanks Sreve!
Nice demo. Say, Biden/Kamala are killing the hobbies. Inflation is through the roof. Things better turn around quickly or all hell is gonna break out.
What does this have to do with his demo?
Very informative video and a clever design. I don't want to sound critical but you really need a shield for the microphone because it was all I could do to make it through the whole video. It is a long video which is ok but the huffing and puffing of you breathing over the microphone was very trying.
How much do these sell for ? That’s a lot of time They look awesome !
These chuck manufacturers are really nice people. Every time I disassemble one, and then reassemble it, I always find an extra free screw.
You too?!
Cameraman had only one job... and he did it well. Also, the presenter did a fine job too.
Thanks! The cameraman, Clete Selissen, works hard to chase down the best shot. With me doing the demo, that is not an easy job.
OneWay is the best system on the market, I have one too. To set it up I'm zeroing the cutter against the front face of the blank and then move in the desired depth. 😎
Thanks emgi! I’m going to try that method.
Daren, enjoyed the video. I tried some variations of approach though. After drilling the holes I made tennons and hot glued them in place. Then, after gluing in rhe snow flakes, and trees and santas, I made a frame tl hold my belt sander that held it square to the work and let gravity hold it in place. After it was round, making the sphericle shape was tool work. After the hollowing I turned finials and usef them to supportfor the final sanding and finishing. Grest project, good job, I learned a lot and ggot more ideas. TNX
Great demo. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
She was clearly nervous as heck but still an interesting show. AT least I now know all I need to make one of these. 😎 Well done Lynn! 😎
I'll pass your comments along to her. Thanks for watching!
Very clever design. I would have left the sprinkles on, but that's me and not always a good recommendation. Thank you for sharing. Yes, you probably should have used the skew. As it was you were using the point of the gouge with no support from the bevel. I wouldn't have realized this if I hadn't been bringing on Kent's turn a wood bowl series. If you're going to put yourself out there on video you should probably strive to be a good example to all. You're going to have a lot green viewers who will be looking to you as a role model. Be a good one. You're off to a great start. Thank you again for sharing and keep up the good work.
👋👌👍
Don't feel bad. This happens to all woodturners. A perfect example why a mask is a must. Nice job.
Great information. Any chance of a PDF template for the shape?
Sorry ... Gerald never created a paper template.
Probably the best explanation and teaching of the skew. Very easy to understand and grasp the info. Excellent demo, thank you. Ken warrick
Not the least bit impressed sad to say this is amateurish stuff
First
Hi I am looking for any help for someone starting this, particularly on making the index wheel graph for the pattern
Great job, stuff happens, keep up the great work. Awesome ornament
Very worried about the hand position when turning out bell, hand position asking for trouble if bell flew off the lathe!
Thank you for your excellent method of using the skew. I have avoided it because of catches. Your comvex grind and technique has encouraged me to pick up the skew again.
👍
I disagree with Tackishion. I though this was a very interesting and informative demo. I have been turning for quite a while and I still like to learn new techniques and get new ideas. Excellent demo, I'm going to try this on some box lids.
Токарный станок понравился, где такой купить?
Excellent well explained video
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent demonstration ... Thanks!
You are welcome!
On final rounding, I would use a sanding block with around a 180 grit then use finer in steps. instead of a steel tool. RON
Great presentation!
Thanks!
That is jery Benet sled
Correct ... Jerry Bennett is the creator of Segeasy.com and the man who invented the Wedgie Sled.
Great video . I am very interested in wood turning . I hate that your ornament exploded on you but I learned that things are not as easy as some videos let on . Very informative
Fantastic video. Great instructor, everything well thought out and related to the viewer. I learned more in one sitting than I had in 10 years prior to this video. Excellent work Matt and crew!!
I use a large flat chuck to flatten all of my rings mounted to the spindle. After they are all flat I mount the bottom to the spindle and mount my flat chuck to the tailstock mounting the rings by sliding the flat chuck to the preceding ring
Great video on understanding the skew. I have learned a lot more by watching your video. Thanks
Hi Gerald, Very good presentation! You do some outstanding work too! I'm a little confused about how you do the floating rings without using glue? I don't understand why the grooves are cut on the tablesaw? Thanks for the video! Tom
really enjoyable video. i like watching and listening to darren's demos!
The demonstrator (Darren Throop) searched "laser cut snowflake ornament" on eBay, but you can also get them on Amazon as well. He found packs of 10 to 50 ornaments. Scroll through to find the delivery and price point that works for your project. There are also different sizes and styles out there, just change the dimensions of the cube, hole diameter and thickness of laminated snowflake to work.
If you are interested in woodturning.... This is not the person to watch...
Thanks for visiting our channel.
Thank you.
Thanks for a good video. I would be very interested in getting a copy of your plan sheet. Is it available in PDF format?
Go to www.baylakewoodturners.com/handouts.html ... it is a PDF that can be downloaded
Respect to you for forging ahead with the demo. Pressure created diamonds. Thanks for the informational video.
I cut my blank forth of inch longer than needed, then drill recessives both ends and drill though hole. Then mount as one piece and shape entire piece, then use forth inch to cut off.. Able to grip from both ends . Works well for me.
Very Hard to watch this video. Great info though.
